KVIS Vision for Business Streets
It has often been said that it’s difficult to get anywhere without knowing where one wants to go. Several years ago the Businesses & Commercial Properties Committee members were having a discussion about Delaware Avenue. The discussion was about the visual appeal of the street and the sense that there was seemingly a lack of coordinated, purposeful vision for it. It was noted that the street has Italianate sidewalks, Colonial /Victorian street lamps on the avenue, very mixed architectural styles and 1970’s globe lighting at the Village Green. It was then noted that all of the Village business streets had a look of sprouting up whenever and however. The Committee decided that an easily articulated vision for each business street was needed. They set about studying Military Road, Elmwood Avenue, Kenmore Avenue, and Delaware Avenue in detail and decided that they would create a one sentence description of the vision for each street. This way people of all ages could know and identify the look and character of the streets and over the course of time, this vision could come to fruition, greatly improving the visual appeal and functionality of each street.
Many people today have a renewed interest in what is called Mid Century Modern furniture design and have a desire to have their home reflect their appreciation for this kind of furniture and decoration. They use care in selecting paint and flooring for the room they will decorate in a Mid Century Modern way, they collect furniture from that era and purchase reproductions of the same while making sure the art they select reflects the modern tone of the room. When speaking with someone about their home, it’s easy for them to say, “My home is modern looking –Mid Century Modern.” Another person may like their home to reflect many different styles and then many easily say, “My home is comfortable, eclectic mix of styles.” Both of these people can easily describe the style they prefer. The Businesses & Commercial Properties Committee’s “Kenmore Business Streets Personality Profiles” is a way to forge a unified and thoughtful vision of these important streets. The Profile of each street includes the one sentence description of the street, what is already present on each street, and future proposed embellishments and style preference.
