Keep the Kenmore post Office
Some years ago our Kenmore Village Post Office had been placed on a list of post offices being considered for closure. The KVIS circulated a petition throughout the Village and created a letter writing campaign to our local Post Office officials and the Post Master General to keep our Post Office open. Our Post Office was eventually removed from the list but this unfortunately, is not an “and they all lived happily ever after” story. There are two main reasons that put the future existence of our Post Office in jeopardy:
So what are we to do as a community to help ensure that we don’t lose this vital service? We will need to continue to use the services offered by our post Office as frequently as possible. For example, if you have letters to be mailed, make sure to mail them from our Delaware Avenue PO, not from another Post Office or from post boxes not located in the Village. Consider other ideas to help like beginning or continuing a tradition of writing letters of sending cards to those you know, and remember to mail your packages and purchase your stamps from our PO.
- Our post office in now not used as the location for sorting Village mail and the start point for our mail delivery is no longer from our Delaware Avenue Post Office, our mail sorting has moved to the Hertel branch Post Office.
- Mail delivery service usage has seen a drastic decrease during this decade both here and in other countries. Royal Mail, Great Britain's postal service is moving toward privatizing the service. Our U.S. Post Services may not be in such a dire situation at this time, but it is clear that in the future, the only post offices that will remain open are those that will fit the post office’s shrinking bottom line. In future, only profitable or break-even post offices will remain.

Visual Appeal at the PO
The KVIS works to help give visual appeal to the Delaware Avenue Post Office in several ways. The garden near the sidewalk in front of the PO is maintained by our Green Thumb Helpers and the planters by the door of the PO are planted by KVIS volunteers. The KVIS also created and gave our Kenmore PO decorated wreaths to place on their door to help celebrate each passing season. |
“Kenmore United Methodist Church is delighted to care for the Post Office avenue garden throughout the growing season through the KVIS Green Thumb Helpers initiative. We plan to add varied flowers to the garden to help brighten the corner!”

Kenmore PO and Safety
Kenmore area residents are being asked by the United States Postal Service (USPS) to remedy possible hazards at our homes. In August of 2012 the USPS posted a 5.2 billion dollar quarterly loss -(wow.) There are reasons for this, especially the controversial advanced funding of pensions within the Service. But no matter what the reason, it is clear that we all must do our part to help and support this vital service or service will be seriously curtailed.
In the past year approximately 75 postal carriers serving ZIP Codes beginning with 142 were injured on the job from slips, trips, falls, dog attacks, or other accidents. This costs the USPS some serious money and the property owner could be liable for compensation for the damages and harm. It makes sense then for us all to assist our postal carriers in delivering mail by making sure our post boxes are positioned well –not behind a fence etc. Make sure the path (and any steps) to the postbox is clear of leaves, snow, and debris. Please remember that in addition to delivering mail, the USPS is often contracted to deliver packages for other mail services like UPS, FedEx.
Should you have a problem with your mail delivery please contact the Hertel Branch or you may call the PO’s national consumer phone line at 1-800-275-8777.
