About Kenmore

Kenmore is a 1.44-square-mile village in Erie County, New York, just north of the City of Buffalo. Incorporated in 1899, it is one of the most densely populated villages in New York State, with a tree-lined main street, walkable neighborhoods, a historic municipal building, and a strong tradition of civic life. This page offers a short introduction to the village, along with contact information for key municipal services.

A short Video portrait

Video produced in 2012 by the Canisius College Video Institute under the direction of Dr. Barbara Irwin, with student directors Molly Rutter, Kyle Kuli, and TJ Schmidt. KVIS is grateful to the Institute and its students for their craft and care in capturing the village.

A Bit of kenmore history

  • The Village of Kenmore was incorporated on September 5, 1899, though the community was being developed as a settlement for decades before.
  • When the village was young, land lots sold for $250 each.
  • The Kenmore Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1903, and the Village Police Department in 1919.
  • The founder of Kenmore was a real estate broker and developer whose work was made possible in part by the arrival of the trolley line.
  • More than fifty businesses on Delaware Avenue have been in operation for over a decade - a rare and remarkable concentration of local commerce for a village of Kenmore's size.
  • In 2014, KVIS's civic work led to Kenmore being named one of 24 finalists nationwide for the All-America City Award from the National Civic League, alongside communities many times its size.
